Roadjag 101: Essential Reading
A sampler syllabus for the lessons of Jag.
- Tim Cahill: Road Fever. The author chronicles his drive from the tip of South America to the Yukon. Say no more.
- Roald Dahl: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Carlie and the Great Glass Elevator, James and the Giant Peach and more. Fantastic and funny stories that never stray into cutesy or maudlin territory.
- Fyodor Dostoevsky: The Gambler. The protagonist sinks into a desperate gambling addiction, cast adrift in that lovely Russian way.
- M.F.K. Fisher, The Art of Eating. In this collection of essays, Fisher demonstrates that food is not merely nourishment for the body, but also for the mind and the heart. A meal is about the setting and the conversation as much as what's on the plate. Which explains why Li'l Debbie Snak Cakes, in the right context, are so darn good!
- Franz Kafka: The Trial, The Metamorphosis. If you ever tried to contest a speeding ticket, you know what we mean.
- Judith Martin: Miss Manners' Guide for the Turn of the Millennium. We love Miss Manners -- gentle, wry and firm by turns, she's both classy and sassy.
- Margaret Mitchell: Gone with the Wind. Featuring our heroine and her jag through Reconstruction.
- Anais Nin: Delta of Venus. Naughtiness in 1930s Paris.
- Dorothy Parker: Complete Stories, Complete Poems. This New York gal knew gin and gents and found them bitter.
- Rainer Maria Rilke: Letters to a Young Poet. An exhortation to unleash creativity and imagination. All right then, we're imagining four million dollars ...
- Jane and Michael Stern: Eat Your Way Across the U.S.A., Road Food. This food-loving duo offer itineraries for good eatin' from Lafayette to Las Vegas.
- Hunter S. Thompson: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail. As stated elsewhere, Thompson has written the essential jag primer. In ... Campaign Trail, he applies the same philosophy to the 1968 presidential campaign -- an example of how life is jag.
- Mike Trones, editor: Literary Las Vegas: The Best Writing About America's Most Fabulour City. Mobsters and showgirls and A-bombs, oh my!
- Cameron Tuttle, Susannah Bettag: The Bad Girl's Guide to The Open Road. Although we also put this book on our hate list because we could have written it, we can't help but appreciate the stain-resistant pink plastic cover and the helpful road tips.
